On this day in 1889, Tipperary won its first ever All Ireland Senior football championship. by defeating Laois on a scoreline of 3-6 – 0-0.
The final was played in Inchicore, Dublin. Tipperary were represented by Bohercrowe and Laois were represented by Maryborough (Portlaoise).
According to ‘The Complete Handbook of Gaelic Games’, there were no semi-finals that year. The handbook also states that the teams were 21-a-side and, rather bizarrely, a goal outweighed any number of points. It was only in 1892 that the value of a goal was set at 5 points and eventually 3 points in 1895.
